When we took our initial survey with students, there was one thing that we were really shocked with. The readership of newspapers among students is alarmingly low. As a result, every student is reduced to being a frog in the well. For the frog the world is his well. It does not know what is happening outside the well. Similarly, for most of our students, their family, friends and school made up their โwellsโ. As a part of this world, we need to be aware of what is happening around us. And for this best way is to read newspapers. If you donโt have a newspaper, subscribe to one today! You may check the school library. If even that is impossible, you can pool money and buy a common newspaper. But do make sure that you actually buy it. It is also possible to read news items free on google news or Google search – top 10 newspapers in India. Observe how different newspapers report the news in their own special way.
You may say that if knowing about the world is the aim, why not watch news bulletins or the dozens of news channels or even Youtube for that matter? But remember โ it is not only the news but the reading that counts. Reading newspapers is a very healthy exercise in many ways.
Firstly, it improves your comprehension and reading speed โ skills that help in each every subject. When you read more, naturally tend to increase speed and understand faster. Apart from this, a newspaper contains views of the leaders of every field โ what a wonderful way to share the thoughts of the best of the best!
Newspapers cover what is topical, and exams for languages especially have questions set around these. For example, if there has been an earthquake in recent times, you can expect an essay on earthquakes or related themes. And guess who is at an advantage? People who read newspapers, of course!
You can solve crosswords and improve your vocabulary, get information about careers, and even read about a movie before you waste your precious time watching it!
To summarise, let me say that reading newspapers is more benificial than watching news. What do you think?
