Introduction

Students always ask me – How to study effectively ?โ€™ the answer is just one word โ€“ SQRRR! This is a time tested technique and a must for any Smart Student. Mastering this technique will help you increase your grasping power dramatically.

SQRRR consists of these steps:

  • Survey: First using speed reading you must survey the material-this will help your mind to get in frame for absorbing information and create a good background.
  • Question: Now set the objectives by asking questions about the topic. Especially ask questions about what you think is important.
  • Read: After youโ€™re asked the questions, set out on the reading mission-with the questions in your mind. Read very attentively and with full focus. You may take notes while reading.
  • Recite / Recall: This step hammers the material in your memory. Once youโ€™ve read something you need to speak out loudly, the points that youโ€™ve learnt. What will happen then is that you will also hear the material-giving a double effect.
  • Revise: The most important step is to revise your material using FRT, refer to chapter 17 – this makes sure that you donโ€™t forget what youโ€™ve studied.

There are separate articles for each of the five steps โ€“ read and master each step to make your concepts strong and permanent. Apply the principles on the story given below and observe the change.

Story for testing SQRRR skills

I accidentally bumped into a stranger as he passed by,
โ€˜โ€™Oh excuse me pleaseโ€™โ€™ was my reply.
He said, โ€˜โ€™Please excuse me, too; I wasnโ€™t really watching for you.โ€™โ€™
We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said good-bye.
But at home a different story is told, How we treat our loved ones, young and old.
Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My son stood beside me very still.
When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
โ€˜โ€™Move out of the way,โ€™โ€™ I said with a frown.
He walked away, his little heart broken. I didnโ€™t realize how harshly Iโ€™d spoken.
โ€˜โ€™While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use, but the children you love, you seem to abuse.
Go and look on the kitchen floor, Youโ€™ll find some flowers there by the door.
Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.
He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise, You never saw the tears that filled his little eyes.โ€™โ€™
By this time, I was feeling very small, and then my tears began to fall.
I quietly went and knelt by his bed; โ€˜โ€™Wake up, little one, wake up,โ€™โ€™ I said.
โ€˜โ€™Are these the flowers you picked for me?โ€™โ€™
He smiled, โ€˜โ€™I found โ€˜em, out by the tree.
I picked โ€˜em because theyโ€™re pretty like you. I knew youโ€™d like โ€˜em, especially the blue.โ€™โ€™
I said, โ€˜โ€™Son, Iโ€™m very sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldnโ€™t have yelled at you that way.โ€™โ€™
He said, โ€˜โ€™Oh, Mom, thatโ€™s okay. I love you anyway.โ€™โ€™
I said, โ€˜โ€™Son, I love you too, and I do like the flowers, especially the blue.โ€™โ€™
Are you aware that if we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days (that is for all those who are working).
But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family โ€“ an unwise investment indeed, donโ€™t you think.
